Molecular research and the control of Chagas disease vectors Anais da ABC (AABC)
Abad-Franch,Fernando; Monteiro,Fernando A..
Chagas disease control initiatives are yielding promising results. Molecular research has helped successful programs by identifying and characterizing introduced vector populations and by defining intervention targets accurately. However, researchers and health officials are facing new challenges throughout Latin America. Native vectors persistently reinfest insecticide-treated households, and sylvatic triatomines maintain disease transmission in humid forest regions (including Amazonia) without colonizing human dwellings. In these scenarios, fine-scale vector studies are essential to define epidemiological risk patterns and clarify the involvement of little-known triatomine taxa in disease transmission. These eco-epidemiological investigations, as well as...

Description of a second known Liotyphlops caissara specimen (Serpentes: Anomalepididae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
ABEGG,ARTHUR D.; AZEVEDO,WEVERTON S.; FRANCO,FRANCISCO L.; DUARTE,MARCELO R..
Abstract: We recorded a second specimen of the poorly known insular blind snake Liotyphlops caissara. This new specimen expands the morphological variation of the number of dorsal scales in the genus Liotyphlops to 296 (vs. 304 in L. wilderi) and, considering the fact that the holotype of this species was destroyed, the present specimen represents the only available L. caissara individual in zoological collections. Also, this new record constitutes the first out of type locality and expands the distribution of the species in about 40 km to the northeastern. According to IUCN criteria (B1a, b [iii]), we suggest that L. caissara be included in the “Endangered” category, since it occurs in only two insular locations and exhibits an occurrence extension of...

Study of barium sulfate dissolution by scale dissolver based on solutions of DTPA Anais da ABC (AABC)
ABIB,GEIZILA A.P.; CRUZ,GEORGIANA F. DA; VAZ JUNIOR,ALEXANDRE S.L..
Abstract In offshore oil wells it is very common to perform seawater injection through injection wells for hydrocarbon recovery. When seawater, rich in sulfate ion, mixes with formation water, whose composition can contain divalent cations such as barium and calcium, it often leads to sulfate salts formation due to their chemical incompatibility. These salts can cause serious damage in production wells. The barium sulfate (BaSO4) is the most problematic scale and may cause many complications. In order to solve this issue, polycarboxylic acids, such as diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid, are used. Thus, the primary focus of this work was to develop an experimental procedure to study the BaSO4 dissolution. Initially, through static tests to understand the...

A supramolecular proposal of lignin structure and its relation with the wood properties Anais da ABC (AABC)
Abreu,Heber S.; Latorraca,João V.F.; Pereira,Regina P.W.; Monteiro,Maria Beatriz O.; Abreu,Fábio A.; Amparado,Kelysson F..
In spite of the great importance of cellulose the lignin is considered the second most abundant substance of the wood. However, little attention has been given it, mainly to wood properties. The lignin as well as other structural compounds (cellulose and hemicelluloses), has obviously an important role on the wood properties, probably due its composition and existent bonds. In general lignins have β-O-4 (Alkyl Aril Ether) as majoritary bond. This bond in a continued structure form big molecules with spiral conformation as virtual model. Based on this idea, lignins that have high/low β-O-4 content may have differentiated spiraled structures, suggesting different behaviors on the wood properties, which shows that the lignins (Guaicyl:Syringyl (GS)) of...

Patterns of arboreal and terrestrial space use by non-volant small mammals in an Araucaria forest of southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
ABREU,MAURY S.L.; OLIVEIRA,LARISSA R. DE.
Despite the advances in the techniques for researching arboreal small mammals, detailed ecological data, such as habitat use patterns, are practically nonexistent for many species. Using 150 live-traps installed on the ground, understory (1.0-5.0m) and canopy (>5.0m) we investigated patterns of arboreal and terrestrial space use by small mammals in an Araucaria Forest in southern Brazil (29°29′08″S; 50°12′26″W). We also measured 19 microhabitat variables that could potentially influence the abundance of such mammals on each trap station. The results indicated that Akodon montensis and A. serrensis were mainly terrestrial. Delomys dorsalis was also terrestrial, but it also used understory (17.24% of captures). Juliomys sp. and Gracilinanus microtarsus...

The importance of feeding in the larval development of the ghost shrimp Callichirus major (Decapoda: Callianassidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Abrunhosa,Fernando A.; Arruda,Danielle C.B.; Simith,Darlan J.B.; Palmeira,Carlos A.M..
The present study investigated whether the callianassid Callichirus major shows a lecithotrophic behaviour during larval development. Two experiments were carried out. In the first experiment, larvae were subjected to an initial period of feeding, while in the second they were subjected to an initial period of starvation. In Experiment 1, 80% of C. major larvae succeeded moulting to juvenile stage in treatment with larvae fed every day. In the treatments with larvae fed for 1, 2 and 3 days there was total mortality before they reached the megalopal stage. In Experiment 2, zoea larvae showed more resistance when subjected to an initial period of starvation in which larvae starved for 1, 2 and 3 days and had survival rates of 100, 60 and 80%, respectively....

Development and functional morphology of the larval foregut of two brachyuran species from Northern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Abrunhosa,Fernando A.; Simith,Darlan J.B.; Monteiro,Joely R.C.; Souza Junior,Antonio N. de; Oliva,Pedro A.C..
Feeding is an important factor for the successful rearing of larvae of the crab species. Further information on the morphological features of the foregut may to reveal larval feeding behaviour and or/whether there is a lecithotrophy in some or even in all stages of the larval cycle. In the present study, the structural development of the foregut and their digestive functions were examined in larvae of two brachyurans, Uca vocator and Panopeus occidentalis, reared in the laboratory. During larval development, the foreguts of the larvae in the first and last zoeal stages and in the megalopa stage were microscopically examined, described and illustrated. The zoeal foreguts of both species were well developed, showing specialization with a functional...

Lecithotrophic behaviour in zoea and megalopa larvae of the ghost shrimp Lepidophthalmus siriboia Felder and Rodrigues, 1993 (Decapoda: Callianassidae) Anais da ABC (AABC)
Abrunhosa,Fernando A.; Simith,Darlan J.B.; Palmeira,Carlos A.M.; Arruda,Danielle C.B..
Food supply is considered critical for a successful culturing of decapod larvae. However, some species may present yolk reserve sufficient to complete their larval development without external food supply (known as lecithotrophic larval development). In the present study, two experiments were carried out in order to verify whether the callianassid Lepidophthalmus siriboia have lecithotrophic behaviour or, if they need external food for their larval development: Experiment 1, larvae submitted to an initial feeding period and Experiment 2, larvae submitted to an initial starvation period. High survival rate was observed in both experiments, in which only 2 megalopae and 1 zoea III died. These results strongly suggest that larvae of L. siriboia are...

Ontogenetic shape changes and sexual dimorphism in Aegla marginata Bond-Buckup and Buckup, 1994 Anais da ABC (AABC)
ADAM,CAROLINA L.; MAROCHI,MURILO Z.; MASUNARI,SETUKO.
ABSTRACT A study on relative growth, sexual dimorphism and ontogenetic trajectory was carried out in a population of the aeglidAegla marginata coming from Barrinha River, Iguape River Basin, Tunas do Paraná, Paraná State, Brazil. The size the of morphological sexual maturity was estimated for males and females. The analysis of sexual dimorphism and ontogenetic trajectory were performed using geometric morphometric technique. Males reach maturity with 10.58 mm of carapace length (CL) and females with 10.38 mm CL. Sexual size dimorphism was only visible among adults, with males reaching larger sizes. This is probably related to the reproductive strategy of males. However, sexual shape dimorphism was found for both juveniles and adults: the posterior region...

About periodic and quasi-periodic orbits of a new type for twist maps of the torus Anais da ABC (AABC)
ADDAS-ZANATA,SALVADOR.
We prove that for a large and important class of C¹ twist maps of the torus periodic and quasi-periodic orbits of a new type exist, provided that there are no rotational invariant circles (R.I.C's). These orbits have a non-zero "vertical rotation number'' (V.R.N.), in contrast to what happens to Birkhoff periodic orbits and Aubry-Mather sets. The V.R.N. is rational for a periodic orbit and irrational for a quasi-periodic. We also prove that the existence of an orbit with a V.R.N = a > 0, implies the existence of orbits with V.R.N = b, for all 0 < b < a. And as a consequence of the previous results we get that a twist map of the torus with no R.I.C's has positive topological entropy, which is a very classical result. In the end of the paper we...

Uniqueness Properties of The Solution of The Inverse Problem for The Sturm-Liouville Equation With Discontinuous Leading Coefficient Anais da ABC (AABC)
ADILOGLU,ANAR; GÜRDAL,MEHMET; KINCI,AYŞE N..
Abstract The present paper studies uniqueness properties of the solution of the inverse problem for the Sturm-Liouville equation with discontinuous leading coefficient and the separated boundary conditions. It is proved that the considered boundary-value is uniquely reconstructed, i.e. the potential function of the equation and the constants in the boundary conditions are uniquely determined by given Weyl function or by the given spectral data.

The Generalized Odd Lindley-G Family: Properties and Applications Anais da ABC (AABC)
AFIFY,AHMED Z.; CORDEIRO,GAUSS M.; MAED,MOHAMED E.; ALIZADEH,MORAD; AL-MOFLEH,HAZEM; NOFAL,ZOHDY M..
Abstract: We introduce a new class of continuous distributions called the generalized odd Lindley-G family. Four special models of the new family are provided. Some explicit expressions for the quantile and generating functions, ordinary and incomplete moments, order statistics and Rényi and Shannon entropies are derived. The maximum likelihood method is used for estimating the model parameters. The flexibility of the generated family is illustrated by means of two applications to real data sets.

Unenlagiid theropods: are they members of the Dromaeosauridae (Theropoda, Maniraptora)? Anais da ABC (AABC)
Agnolin,Federico L.; Novas,Fernando E..
In the present paper we analyze the phylogenetic position of the derived Gondwanan theropod clade Unenlagiidae. Although this group has been frequently considered as deeply nested within Deinonychosauria and Dromaeosauridae, most of the features supporting this interpretation are conflictive, at least. Modification of integrative databases, such as that recently published by Hu et al. (2009), produces significant changes in the topological distribution of taxa within Deinonychosauria, depicting unenlagiids outside this clade. Our analysis retrieves, in contrast, a monophyletic Avialae formed by Unenlagiidae plus Aves.

Evaluation of antibiotics as a methodological procedure to inhibit free-living and biofilm bacteria in marine zooplankton culture Anais da ABC (AABC)
Agostini,Vanessa O.; Macedo,Alexandre J.; Muxagata,Erik.
There is a problem with keeping culture medium completely or partially free from bacteria. The use of prokaryotic metabolic inhibitors, such as antibiotics, is suggested as an alternative solution, although such substances should not harm non-target organisms. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of antibiotic treatments in inhibiting free-living and biofilm bacteria and their half-life in artificial marine environment using the copepod Acartia tonsa as bioindicador of non-harmful antibiotic combinations. Regarding to results, the application of 0.025 g L-1 penicillin G potassium + 0.08 g L-1 streptomycin sulphate + 0.04 g L-1 neomycin sulphate showed great potential for use in marine cultures and scientific experiments without...

Evaluation of wound healing and antimicrobial properties of aqueous extract from Bowdichia virgilioides stem barks in mice Anais da ABC (AABC)
AGRA,ISABELA K.R.; PIRES,LUANA L.S.; CARVALHO,PAULO S.M.; SILVA-FILHO,EURÍPEDES A.; SMANIOTTO,SALETE; BARRETO,EMILIANO.
The decoction of the stem barks from Bowdichia virgilioides KUNTH is a folk remedy used to treat inflammatory disorders in Latin American and Brazil. In the present study, the wound healing activity of aqueous extract of the stem bark from B. virgilioides, called AEBv, was evaluated by the rate of healing by wound contraction and period of epithelization at different days post-wound using the wound excisional model. On day 9, the AEBv-treated animals exhibited significative reduction in the wound area when compared with controls. In wound infected with S. aureus, the AEBv significantly improved the wound contraction when compared to the saline-treated mice. The histological analysis showed that AEBv induced a collagen deposition, increase in the fibroblast...

The positive moderating effect of absorptive capacity on R&D investment: the case of Argentina’s ict firms Anais da ABC (AABC)
AGRAMUNT,LUIS FELIPE; BERBEL-PINEDA,JUAN M..
Abstract The model analyzes the positive moderating role of absorptive capacity (ACAP) in the innovative outcomes of the firms. It focuses on ACAP as a moderating variable of the innovative efforts that firms develop or have the chance of incorporating from outside and not just as an antecedent of the innovation results. The empirical evidence collected comes from a study conducted on 189 SMEs working in IT services in Argentina and the results prove the main hypothesis of how ACAP is a positive moderating factor of the innovative effort of firms, even in the case of the connections created by their the participation in international networks not having a high correlation. Some suggestions for policymaker managers and future lines of research are provided.

Genetic variation in native and farmed populations of Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) in the Brazilian Amazon: regional discrepancies in farming systems Anais da ABC (AABC)
Aguiar,Jonas; Schneider,Horacio; Gomes,Fátima; Carneiro,Jeferson; Santos,Simôni; Rodrigues,Luis R.; Sampaio,Iracilda.
The tambaqui, Colossoma macropomum, is the most popular fish species used for aquaculture in Brazil but there is no study comparing genetic variation among native and farmed populations of this species. In the present study, we analyzed DNA sequences of the mitochondrial DNA to evaluate the genetic diversity among two wild populations, a fry-producing breeding stock, and a sample of fish farm stocks, all from the region of Santarém, in the west of the Brazilian state of Pará. Similar levels of genetic diversity were found in all the samples and surprisingly the breeding stock showed expressive representation of the genetic diversity registered on wild populations. These results contrast considerably with those of the previous study of farmed stocks in the...
